“You
made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my
mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship
is marvelous – how well I know it. You watched me as I was being formed in
utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb. You saw me
before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment
was laid out before a single day had passed” (Psalm 139:13-16,
NLT).
A little girl was visiting at her grandpa's house. She
crawled up into his lap and said, “Grandpa, did God make you?”
He says “Oh, yes, my dear, God created me a long time
ago.”
She says “Did God make me, too?”
He says “Oh, yes, my dear, God created you not too long
ago.”
She thinks about it for a moment, and then she says, “God's
been doing much better work lately, hasn't He?”
That's a girl who appreciates the way God made her!
Unfortunately, not everyone feels that way. Sometimes
we wish we were made a little better, or differently. I've heard boys say “I wish
I was taller. When I play basketball, the taller boys always block my shots.
And when I play defense, I'm too short to block their shots! I know that God is
great and God is good, but I wish He would have made me taller.”
I know some guys who say “I wish I was a little more
handy around the house. My wife can put together an entire bedroom set all by
herself, and I barely even know how to make the bed! When I see all the things
she can do, and I see all the things I can't do, I feel inadequate. I know that
God is great and God is good, but I wish He would have made me a little more
handy.”
I’ve listened as young girls and older ladies have
stated, “I wish my legs were a little longer, or that I was put together
better. I think I need to have some work done so I’ll look like I should. I
know that God is great and God is good, but I wish He would have made me a
little more attractive.”
If we’re not careful, what ends up happening is that
instead of showing appreciation to God for how He created us, we criticize God
for how He didn’t create us! Instead of praising Him that we are fearfully and
wonderfully made, we blame Him for not following our specifications or ideas of
the way we should be.
So today, I wish to remind you of the love and the care
that God put into creating us. Nothing He does is by accident or mistake – He
made each of us precisely the way He wanted in order for us to accomplish
precisely what He planned. Live in the knowledge that you are a Masterpiece – not
figuratively, but literally!
Pray
with Me:
God,
you made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my
mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship
is marvelous – how well I know it. You watched me as I was being formed in
utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb. You saw me
before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment
was laid out before a single day had passed. I will not dwell on what I view as
imperfections and criticize you for how you didn’t create me, and choose rather
to praise you for creating me just the way I am, so I may accomplish exactly
what you had in mind when you formed me in my mother’s womb. Amen.
